What is Bitcoin mining difficulty and what is its current level?

Created 2026/02/27

I. What is Mining Difficulty?

Bitcoin mining difficulty measures the amount of work and complexity required for miners to complete computational tasks, directly impacting mining costs and profits.

As the number of miners increases, the mining difficulty gradually increases. To ensure that new blocks are generated approximately every 10 minutes, the Bitcoin system automatically adjusts the difficulty approximately every two weeks, which is crucial for ensuring stable network operation.

Mining difficulty reflects the difficulty miners face in solving mathematical problems under the Proof-of-Work (PoW) mechanism. As miners' computing power increases, the system maintains a stable block generation rate by increasing the difficulty.

Mining difficulty adjustments are based on a target value. Miners need to find a valid hash value lower than the target value. The smaller the target value, the greater the mining difficulty, requiring miners to perform more computation to achieve the target. As network hashrate increases, the target value decreases, thus increasing the mining difficulty.

This mechanism is crucial for maintaining a balance in block generation speed. If mining is too easy, blocks are generated too quickly, potentially leading to network instability; conversely, excessive difficulty delays block generation, causing transaction confirmation delays.

II. Mining Difficulty Adjustment Mechanism

The Bitcoin network automatically adjusts its difficulty approximately every two weeks (more precisely, every 2,016 blocks generated). The adjustment logic is simple: the system reviews the actual block generation rate over the past period. If the network finds that the computing power is too strong, causing the generation time of these 2,016 blocks to be much shorter than the planned two weeks, the network will automatically increase the difficulty, making the subsequent problems more difficult to solve, thus reducing the block generation speed back to about 10 minutes. Conversely, if the computing power decreases and the block generation slows down, the network will decrease the difficulty, making the problems easier to solve, to ensure that the speed is not too slow. This adjustment is achieved at the code level by changing the "target value." The smaller the target value, the harder it is to find a valid hash value, and the greater the difficulty. To prevent drastic fluctuations in the network, the magnitude of a single difficulty adjustment is also limited to a safe range.

III. Current Bitcoin Mining Difficulty

Bitcoin mining difficulty has recently experienced a dramatic "first drop, then rise" rollercoaster ride. In general, the current difficulty is significantly higher than it was a month ago.

The specific situation is as follows:

1. First, a sharp drop: Affected by the winter storm "Fern" in late January this year, many mining farms in major US mining centers voluntarily shut down to give electricity to residential users, causing a short-term plunge in the network's computing power. In response, the Bitcoin network automatically triggered a difficulty adjustment on February 9th, reducing it by approximately 11.16% in one go—one of the largest reductions since the Chinese ban in 2021.

2. This was followed by a violent rebound: As the weather improved and mining operations fully resumed, hashrate quickly recovered. The network adjusted again around February 20th, this time with a violent difficulty rebound of approximately 15%, briefly surging to near an all-time high of 144.4 trillion. According to data from February 25th, the difficulty had surpassed 101.65 trillion (this refers to an index; the actual value refers to the difficulty coefficient), confirming the upward trend.
